I'm going to talk to my tax guy about this too, but I'm pretty sure he won't understand the situation in an immigration context...

I'm American, living with my Canadian boyfriend in Ontario for over a year. I didn't want to file taxes with him; we have a joint bank account, but I kind of wanted to keep taxes separate. But since we are common law, is it 1) legally necessary to file together, or 2) heavily advised to file together (since it may look suspicious if we don't)?

Thanks so much for all of your advice.

No you don't have to file together, but if you have no income, it maybe a tax advantage to file as joint.
