Hello, this is the first time I write here. I have applied for PR in July, 2011 and for extension of tourist visa in August, 2011. Of course, I am still waiting... the waiting time for first stage of approval is 11 months! I applied with my common law partner (canadian) as my sponsor.
I have some questions because I find all this info on the internet overwhelming:

1- Can I have OHIP with the first stage of approval?
2- Can I work in that stage as well?
3- Is there any insurance I can have while waiting? is it just for emergencies?
4- what are the common reasons for being denied the PR? apart from criminal record.

Thank you all for reading this!!

1. You can apply for OHIP, but it is a very iffy proposition, some applicants have got it prior to 1st level approval and some haven't.
2. No, you would have to get an approved LMO from an employer and then apply for a work permit in the normal fashion outside Canada or at a POE, until you receive 1st level approval.
3. You would have to purchase it from a private company.
4. Marriage of convenience.
You can have provincial insurance as soon as you apply for immigration if you live in Alberta.

From Alberta Health and Welfare

5. Does applying for permanent residency status automatically mean I have or will maintain my AHCIP coverage?

In order to be eligible for AHCIP coverage you must have a valid Canada entry document or a letter from Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) indicating a “first stage approval” has been made regarding your application for permanent residency.

If you receive a “first stage approval” letter from CIC with respect to your permanent residency application, please forward a copy of the document along with your completed application for AHCIP coverage and other required documentation to Alberta Health and Wellness. Your AHCIP coverage may be reinstated to the date of the “first stage approval” letter but not earlier.

If your Canada entry document is due to expire and you have not yet received this letter, you may be eligible for a one-time-only temporary extension of your AHCIP coverage. Contact our office before the expiration date of your Canada entry document.

You may wish to purchase Visitor to Canada Insurance – available from private insurance companies – if you are physically present in Canada but not eligible for AHCIP coverage.
Thank you all! Unfortunately I am in Toronto, not Alberta... I am very happy to know than with the first letter I'm gonna be eligible for OHIP!! any other reason for rejection apart from marriage for convenience or criminal record???
