My boyfriend and I are planning on getting married. He lives in Ontario and I live in Michigan. We want to live in Canada once we're married. I've looked up the process and I'm pretty sure I understand the main steps but my question is this: I saw on the government website that one might not be eligible to sponsor if you:

"were convicted of a violent criminal offence, any offence against a relative or any sexual offence—depending on circumstances such as the nature of the offence, how long ago it occurred and whether a pardon was issued"

The problem is that he got out of prison a year ago for a couple of counts of breaking and entering as well as one assault charge. Are these considered violent criminal offenses? I'm hoping I know what the answer is but figured I would ask the experts to check!

If he isn't allowed to sponsor me, would it be easy for his sister to sponsor me?

Thanks in advance for your help!
Your best bet will be to get a lawyer's advice - as recent as his offense was (plus the violence added to it), I think you're going to be in for some trouble getting approved.

His sister will NOT be able to sponsor you.

You might look into what it would take for him to immigrate here (to the US). You can also look into other ways you can immigrate to Canada - working class or something.
Thanks. :)

I can probably get in on a student visa.
