I wasn\'t quite sure which forum to put this in, but I guess this is as good as any. I am considering going to college. I have been a permanent resident for almost a year now. Am I understanding correctly that since I DO have my PR, I am allowed to attend full time or part time schooling without having to worry about obtaining any type of study permit? I ask because as I was looking through many different types of colleges I thought one of them said that even if you\'re a permanent resident you must have a study permit and this perplexed me. I went to the CIC site and I everything I read on there about a study permit has to do with people who are NOT permanent residents.

Anyone here attend college after obtaining your permanent residency?
You don\'t need any permits to attend college or university once you are a landed permanent resident.
I started college after getting my PR. No problem.
The only real difference between a citizen and PR is that a PR cannot vote, run for office, or obtain a Canadian passport. Otherwise, so long as a PR maintains status by remaining in country and not committing major crimes, a PR can do everything a citizen can.
Thanks for the help on that. I either misread some info on one of the school\'s websites or they had it incorrect.
Hello,
Me too i am new permanent resident and i am trying to attend colege but the thing is permanent residents can not apply for OSAP during the first year.
Technically i am going to postpone my plans for studying for the next year.

I\\\'d love to see a link on that if you have one. There\\\'s a provincial election this year and we might be able to see some movement on that if it is accurate.

;-)

Thanks!
I got financial aid from the province the first year I attended, and also bursaries from the school.
Hello,
Here is the link in the province of Ontario you need to be a resident of Ontario at least 12 months in order to be eligible for OSAP.

That clears it up. Its not that permanent residents can\'t attend their first year, its that people that have resided for less than 12 months in Ontario, regardless of whether they came from Alberta or Albania, don\'t qualify for OSAP.
