my status expired in Canada, However I am married and my wife is canadian I am about to apply to change my immigration status for permanent residency.

can i still apply for work permit?

You can apply for an open work permit as part of an inland application, but it will take several months for that to come through, and since you don\'t have legal status, they will probably bump your application to the local office, and depending on where you live, that would add a couple of years to the equation. Getting a regular work permit would mean leaving the country because they can\'t grant one from inside the country, and since you are married to a Canadian, they probably won\'t give you one, and there is also the chance they wouldn\'t let you back in the country.

eventhough if you are out of your status once you are married u can still apply for immigration. that s what I was told correct me if I m wrong. what I want to know is am I still eligible to appy for open work permit ?
