U.S. Citizen from Los Angeles applying Outland Spousal, this is where we are at:

-Got married in July, in Longueil/Montreal here as a visitor.

-just got my Medicals done today (Aug 25) here in Montreal for $195 + $10 for photos (they took 6 passport sized photos, and left me with the remaining 5--- what can I use these for?)

-Will make FULL payment to immigration this week.

-will get my fingerprints this week in Montreal- then send to FBI asking they send records back here in Montreal to my Spouse's home.

-We are flying to California next week to visit and also take care of my State police check while we are there.

-After 2 weeks stay, drive my car back to Canada- ask permission for a 1 year VR to stay with wife during process. If granted, we hope that by the time we get back to the house my FBI records will be here- if not soon after.

So if all goes well, we will be back here in Canada together with a VR, and all documents ready to apply for Outland application.

From what I've gathered, this is how the outland process works since it is very "quick"- you send everything in the beginning instead of waiting for them to ask for it. We plan to send:

-completed forms downloaded from CIC
-receipt for Medical examination
-FBI police report
-State police report
-Marriage certificate (can it be a copy?)
-Birth certificates (can those be copies?)

Couple questions:

The doctor asked where the Medicals should be sent, I said Buffalo... is this correct? I assume it goes to Ottawa first and then forwarded to Buffalo.

Also, on our Outland application it asks for my address- I'm planning to use my address in the U.S. for legal purposes- however is it possible for me to use my Spouse's address instead since I plan on asking the border for a VR to stay with her in Canada while everything is processed?

I'm just worried that if I'm using my U.S. address and I'm granted entry into Canada- that they will be sending important documents to my P.O. Box in California and I won't be able to get my mail while I'm here....thus delaying the process if I need to send back forms they have sent me.

Actually the medical results will go the Regional Medical Centre in Ottawa, and then when Buffalo is ready to review the results, they'll request them from the RMC. The DMPs never send the results directly to the embassies.

You can for sure use the Canadian address as your mailing address - but only if you are admitted to Canada with a VR that's valid for at least one year, can you use the Canadian address as your residential address. I actually don't recommend this anyway - because if you use the Canadian residential address, your file is stuck in Buffalo. If you use a residential address in the States and Buffalo gets backlogged with applications, they can transfer your ap to one of the other US visa offices (NYC, Detroit, Los Angeles or Seattle) to expedite processing. The other consideration is the interview - if you don't want to have to travel back to LA for an interview, designate the office (of the above four) that is closest to your Province on the "Interview Location Preference" form that's included in the US Region Specific forms. That way, if they require an interview, they'll transfer to that office, even though your US residential address is closer to LA. If they're just going to transfer to expedite (no interview), they'll send to LA.

Again, using the Canadian address as your mailing address is absolutely permissible and the best way to be sure you get everything you need mailed to you in Canada.

A couple other notes about crossing the border and getting the VR when you come back from Calif (say "Hi" to my family while you're there, please!). Let your sponsor do ALL the talking - and don't ask for a VR. Your sponsor should tell the IO that you're married, have the certified original copy of your marriage licence and proof of income for your sponsor, and proof that you'll be applying for PR (fees receipt is sufficient) and let THEM tell you guys that you need a VR. They'll determine how long it's valid for . . . it really makes no difference. All you need to know is that it enables you to apply to extend from within Canada so that you don't have to deal with the border again.

And, yes, you can send photocopies of your marriage licence and your birth certificates with the PR ap - and, later, with your extension application.
