The United States made an unprecedented foray into Canada's election campaign on Tuesday, warning politicians not to bash Washington in their bid to win the January 23 election.

But an unapologetic Liberal Prime Minister Paul Martin responded immediately by saying "c'est la vie" -- that's life -- if the United States did not like his remarks, and he would not accept anyone telling him he cannot defend his country.

In a hard-hitting speech in Ottawa, U.S. Ambassador David Wilkins lamented what he called relentless and incessant criticism of his country, which he speculated might begin to sow doubt about the strength of the binational relationship.

"Canada never has to tear the United States down to build itself up," Wilkins said.

"It may be smart election politics to thump your chest and constantly criticize your friend and your No. 1 trading partner. But it's a slippery slope and all of us should hope it doesn't have a long-term impact on our relationship."

Wilkins did not name the prime minister directly, but he specifically targeted a comment made last week at the Montreal climate change conference in which Martin called on the United States to heed a "global conscience" and join efforts to combat global warming.

That remark -- on top of criticism of U.S. policy on lumber, guns, passports and Iraq -- appeared to have riled the White House the most, particularly since Canada has a proportionally worse record than the United States on reining in greenhouse gas emissions.

"I would respectfully submit to you that when it comes to a 'global conscience' the United States is walking the walk," Wilkins said, addressing the Canadian Club of Ottawa.

"And when it comes to climate change, we are making significant progress, greater progress than many of those who have been most critical of the U.S."

In the campaign for the June 2004 election Martin regularly said Canada did not want U.S.-style health care, fiscal deficits, taxes or attack ads.
But in the last several months, particularly in frustration over U.S. refusal to eliminate duties on Canadian softwood, he has made more direct attacks on U.S. policy, and continued to do so during the election campaign.

Martin refused to back down on Tuesday in Surrey, British Columbia.
"That our friends do not like what we say -- well, c'est la vie. I'm going to defend Canada and I'm right on softwood lumber and I'm right on climate change and I won't let anybody tell me that I should not defend my country," he said. He also dismissed the idea that he was trying to single out Washington as part of his election campaign.

"I have not made the United States or any country a target in this campaign," he said, noting that he had outlined Canada's stand on softwood lumber and climate change long before the election was called.
Martin, whose minority government was brought down on November 28 after an official report detailed Liberal kickbacks which were used in election campaigns, currently leads Conservative leader Stephen Harper in the polls but not by enough to regain a majority in Parliament

if thy really care about relationship, please pay us back 6 billion soft wood lumber duties
ya... their indignation really made me laugh. I half hope that each party leader might suggest that Paul Martin was being kind in his comments.
lol.

ahhh the US is too hard headed...
Compare Macro vs. Micro: You know, the US - Canada leaders flaming each other/each other's countries/policies like this sorta reminds me of some threads on an internet discussion forum ...(no malice intended) =D

I second that. But, I am always up for criticizing my home country. Hopefully my home country will change within two years.!!!
Ive just finished reading all of Micheal Moores books so im so anti Bush right now its not even funny LOL so il refrain because I know we have yanks on this site and i dont wish to offend. but feel free to bash UK i agree with everything LOL
I don't like it when people bash Canada or Canadians. I don't like it when people bash America or Americans. I'm no fan of Bush, and I've never voted for a Bush. But, Paul Martin is nothing to write home about, either. As far as I'm concerned, all of you America haters can go **** yourselves.

I should add, George Bush got ass handed in every state I've ever lived in. We did our part.
Perhaps we can cool it with the anti-American sentiment on this board.

There are actually some Americans here who are immigrating for reasons other than hating George Bush. There are some people here who happen to love both Countries equally, for different reasons... myself included.

I'm no fan of Bush, but IMO Paul Martin has no redeeming qualities that I can think of, either.
I really cannot believe David Wilkins even bothered saying anything. It would have been much better if he has just been quiet. We should probably do the same. Sorry if our comments have offended any of our American friends here.
Bush and Martin they both need to attend crash ethics courses. If Bush administration is manipulative so is Mr Martin. He is also under investigation for federal ad scandal. His predecessor is no holy character either.Mr Chretein had his ass investigated by RCMP many times when it came to contracting some federal golf resort to his friend.May be he got clean or may be not as Canadian politics is too dumb and obnoxious to many Canadians. No offense intended to any Canadians here.

And why are these Canuck politicians are *****ing all about. They all know US is their boss.Every intelligent Canadian turns to US be successful, from celebrities to space scientist. No Canada is not dull that it can't assimilate talents, it is more of obnoxious attitude of administration. If one investigates in myopic detail role of government in academic level, one will find how is the entire governmental role is retarded;a country with ample resources and opportunities which doesn't surface thanks to the gov.May be Bush is homophobic, frantic, war monger or whatsoever. But there is no point in rotting behind the US to make a point in political arena. No one should forget that,in 90s it was Clinton's genuine political thoughts in collaboration with Chretein that stopped Quebec separation. One is a oil tycoon and the other shipping and I have one response for both Shove it!
OK... I think we better stop. when you are the little guy, you get defensive. The US could squish us like a bug... but we could always turn off the lights first so it would be harder to find us.

Most decent Americans like Canada and not only wouldn't squish you, would rain holy hell on anybody who messed with you. We aren't as evil as everybody thinks.
wow, didn't realize posting this article would start world war 3!

I have equal likes and dislikes about the way things are done in both countries... lol but i'm not gonna diss either. (cept the whole anti-gay problem the states has and the horrible healthcare no one can afford anyway...)

and i'm out :D
