Hi Everyone.

I left Canada right after finishing University and have been out of the country working for 14 years. I am in IT and have worked for British and a couple of big American multinationals. While looking on the internet at jobs available in Canada and see that many want so called Canadian experience. Does this strickly mean working in Canada or would it extend to Western organizations abroad as well?

I hear that Alberta is booming but wondered what the situation in Vancouver and Toronto is like also.

I am going back to Canada probably around Jan/Feb 2007.

Thanks in advance for any advice. :)

cheers

Hi, my husband is in Toronto now for a few weeks looking for temporary work while we start our PR processing. He is also in IT and has met with some agents, none of whom have even mentioned Canadian experience. In fact everyone who has seen his resume are very impressed with his Sydney experience and seem to be doing the run-around to try to get his resume to all the companies they can before he heads back to Australia. They are all telling him he will have no problems at all getting a job, it's the lack of visa that will pose a problem. He actually has a lead for a company in Edmonton who are already willing to assist him through the process. Whether we consider it or not is another story! (see my other thread). But after starting to look for work 5 days ago and with a job offer already, I think we have achieved the almost non-imagineable!! One agent has also sent his resume to companies they deal with in Calgary.

So from our point of view I would say just go for it. Perhaps before making the trip back to Canada you could ring some agents/companies and get their opinion, after sending them your resume via email. However, we also rang people before he left Sydney but didn't get much of a response. There's nothing like actually being there. If you get in contact with the right people then I think you won't have any trouble. Good luck with it.
Thanks Indigo,

Nice to hear it :) You are right one just has to plunge in. If it is not a secret what area of IT is your husband in. I have done a bit of everything Sys Admin, Network Admin, Windows, Linux, User support (no real programming though) and while I am waiting for my wife's PR I would like to study up on the areas which are in demand.

What would you guys recommend concentrating on?

thanks and good luck :)
My husband is a program/project manager. From the CIC website you'll see that some software positions must be in demand, because they can by-pass the HRDC approval - don't know if they relate to your line of work. Perhaps you can check out the website, you may get some info there as to in-demand jobs. There's also information on websites/agents relating to IT that you may find helpful. I don't know what's in high demand, but if you check those websites you'll get an idea of what's available. That's all we did from Sydney before he left. Best of luck.:)
the vancouver market is hot for entertainment programmers. We have Electronic Arts.
