Hi folks,

Can anyone tell me what things are like now in Toronto, i.e. crime, good/bad neighbourhoods and so on.

cheers

Guelph
The area of Jane and Finch might be an area you'd want to avoid.
I live in Midtown Yonge and St Clair area, and I love it, crime is near on non existant lovely ppl, it has a village like quality yet is only 3 intersections north of Yonge and Bloor the centre of Toronto. I can be downtown in 15 minutes and also uptown in the same.
{This is a total sidebar to the orginal question. We drove through TO on our way back from Ottawa recently, but planned to simply drive through and hope that our son didn't notice the CN Tower, because he'd want to spend time in the city and do his favorite things there. He LOVES Toronto, and we do too but we just didn't have time, and well, try explaining that to a 3 year old. Of course we got stuck in rush hour traffic so getting through took 3 times longer than we'd figured, and of course it was right at Jane and Finch that our son decided he needed to use the washroom RIGHT NOW. We laughed that we should make him one of those "My parents went to ____and all I got was this lousy T shirt type shirts that should say something like My parents took me to Toronto and all we did was survive Jane and Finch or something. OK, well it was funny at the time, in all the stress of rush hour Toronto traffic! LOL So yeah, avoid that area.}
Funny you mention your cross streets! I live in Yonge and Davisville! I love our neighbourhood too. It's peaceful, people and dog friendly. I like walking around here. When my spouse and I feel like it, we walk along Bayview Ave. and south of Eglinton because I like windowshopping there.

If you walk up Mount Pleasant there are some lovely shops up there to look at. I live on Mount Pleasant but say yonge as its easier. you probably walk your dog in the big dog park just behind Yonge like i do LOL weve probably walked past one another. Youl recognise my dog hes the one sniffing butts and being a pain in the behind.

Our wedding reception is at one of the pubs around there, if your not busy Friday night take a walk up il PM you pub.

Ive invited Canadiannokie and her hubby. your more than welcome to join us for a pint of guiness and enjoy some tucker from back home :D
Thanks folks,

Yes the Yonge St Clair area is very nice but from what I hear housing prices have gone through the roof. The Danforth (Greek area) on the internet looks still pretty affordable but my question is about crime (and or lack of it). I grew up in Toronto but have been away (very far away:( working for 15 years. Is there a gun problem? Surely it still is nowhere near the level of US cities.

cheers

Geoff
There is gun voilence here but most of it is around the scarborough areas like Malvern, Kingston and Morningside, and also someone else mentioned Jane and Finch.

Personally i think Danforth is horrible! it smells raelly bad cos of all the trash from the restaurants, its always busy and old greek men are really mean!! The Danforth is a looonnnggg road running from Broadview all the way out to Victoria park, id say from Broadview to Pape is nice enough not much crime (although someone was shot at Pape not long ago) but anywhere East of that is hit and Miss.

As for our area, renting is quite reasonable but if your thinking of buying youl need a lotto 649 ticket. house across the road from us sold for $750,000. But our rent is $700 a month for a batchelor and the one beds go for $925 and there HUGE!!!

Another nice area im told is the beaches. very family orientated.
Interesting. East of Pape houses are not super cheap but more reasonable. How much crime are we really talking about. I mean can you walk around in the evenings, are there needles lying around, a lot of breakins? I guess it depends on what peoply are used to.
To be honest I dont know, and if im brutally honest im a deer park snob LOL ive been very lucky to live in the best areas of Toronto. Im sure you can look at police statistics somewhere, all i know is that im my area everyone is very freindly I feel safe walking down the street at midnight. When i go to zellers at Victoria Park and Danfroth I hold my handbag closer. But ive never lived there and maybe if i did i might have a different outlook.
I am sure this is the same in Toronto. The Vancouver city website has a link to the police crime statistics. you can get a sense of where the break-ins and assualts take place. Usually they increase along the public transit corridor. Also, the Ontario or Toronto Economic Commission will have profiles for different neighbourhoods that can give you some data. Lastly, not sure how helpful this is - http://www.toronto.ca/bia/toronto_bia.htm

this is a list of business communities across Toronto. Many have their own websites and can sometimes offer you a flavour of the area. They can tell you about what the shopping is like, etc.
Guelph, when my husband was looking for apartments for us, he checked out an apartment located at Danforth and Broadview. It was for a one-bed costing $850 with parking. It's located a block away from the Broadview station of the Bloor line. He was tempted to get it since it had a very convenient location. The thing was, he realized that I might be uncomfortable with the surrounding area, especially at night. That's the reason why he got our apartment located at midtown.

Like what BV mentioned, our rent is around the mid-900s with parking. We also have a pool, underground and visitors parking and walking distance to the TTC stop. If you look for apartments in Yonge and Eglinton, then you'll definitely experience sticker shock. I believe one-beds there start at around $1100.
It would be great to meet with up you and Shaun one of these days. I didn't realize that a fellow RTC lives in my area. Neat!
