We landed yesterday in Windsor, and I have mixed feelings about how it went. We were greeted at the border by the most horrible border agent, who grilled us about why we had a rental car (not importing our car right away) and didn't seem to believe us that we were landing. She reluctantly allowed us to immigration.

At immigration, the IO was alright. He didn't allow us to use our Canadian address that we supplied for sending our PR cards, because it was the address of a friend rather than our new permanent home. I've never heard of anyone having this problem before, and it left me a little afraid that he was going to deny us. Of course, he didn't, and everything else went fine. He checked our passports and COPRs and has us wait for 10 minutes or so in the lobby before calling us back in to sign the COPRs. Then we were sent off down the hall to customs.

The customs agents were awesome. After ages of my stressing about the Goods to Follow list, one declared that we won the GtoF list award of the day. She loved that we had models and serial numbers listed and were super thorough. They checked our drivers licenses and did some mysterious paperwork, and we were done. They never asked about POF. I asked about how to bring money in to the country when we do move, and they said to declare large amounts of cash at customs (they don't care what the amount is, just that they know it's coming in), or we can have our bank wire the money to our new bank in Canada and all the paperwork will be done by the banks. Cool. Customs also wrote down that we have a car to follow, but didn't write down our VIN number or model; I asked them about that, but they weren't concerned with the details at all. I hope that won't cause major headaches when we do import the car.

We were never welcomed to the country and received no congratulations, but we're glad to have it done and finally be official. I'm left not knowing what to do about the PR cards; we were given 180 days to provide an address or have to pay processing fees, and I don't understand if we can use our friend's address or not (we were given a form to fill out when we do get an address). We likely won't be able to sell our house and actually move within that timeframe. We also weren't able to get SIN numbers because 1)it was Sunday (we expected that, of course), and 2) we don't yet have a permanent Canadian address. BTW: Customs did require a Canadian address, and didn't care at all that the one we had was a friend's. I'm baffled as to why immigration cared (since I know other people have also been honest about using a friend's address and had no problems).

So in a way we're left with more holes than we had before landing, but in another way, we are official landed immigrants (!) and can move forward from here. Canada has been home to us for so many years, in our hearts and spirits, and I'm thankful to be one step closer to making it our physical home as well.

Thanks to everyone here on this awesome board, epecially Antoine who really "gets" why we're taking such a huge leap of faith. There's been some really great support here on this board, and it would have been a much longer and more lonely experience without it. A huge thanks to Chelle, too, for starting this board, and to the great moderators who try to keep it peaceful. Grouphug
WELCOME TO CANADA!

sorry you did not have a pain-free landing. I think there was someone on the board not to long ago complaining it was all too easy and anti-climactic. Maybe you two could trade!

I will offer up the friends address again. You may have encountered the IO from Hell.

ps... I get it too.
just keep in mind that border agent is not hotel front desk, he/she has no obligation to greet you or not, maybe they just had a bad days...
for no matter what reasons, as long as you get in, that's fine..
Don't battle whatever? don't say things you are not required to say.
they are the only people who can turn the back on you and say no to you.

wannabe, plz do not rush with anything, underwise you might lose the chance of selling house at the price you wanna, or have the house you wanna, relax.... Once you in, you in.
Thanks Joohliya; that means more than I can ever express. I am ever amazed by the open-mindedness and kindness of the people on this board.

DB: you are right about selling our house. We have some personal reasons for being patient and staying where we are until spring, and getting more money for our house (hopefully) is only a small one. As winter drags on I'm sure my impatience will grow, but for now I am trying to concentrate on each step of the process as it evolves.

We had a few hours to kick around in Windsor before heading home yesterday, and of course our first stop was to Chapters. I didn't find a Canadian History for Dummies book (!) and the history books I did find were incredibly lengthy and dry, but I did find a tantalizing book called Fire and Ice: The United States, Canada and they Myth of Converging Values by Michael Adams. I think it will be a relavent read right now. I could easily spend hundreds of dollars each time I walk through those doors, and I'm really looking forward to my first Canadian library card! :)
no need to buy it, just borrow from library. Canadian history for dummies is the best for a lazy afternoon, spend 3--4 hours, done.. Chapters can't have those books, they can't sell them...lol. nobody gotta read it except us, not even new immigrants, they need time to work..

get a regional library card, then you can order books around the province if your local branch doesn't have... or college library. That's the place I spend most on the weekend after gym.... yep, most of Canadian college opens their gym for small amount of charge to locals.

did you apply your SIN and Ontario health care card? remeber to convert your driver licence, you know? In B.C after 3 month, no more covert, you can use Ontario driver licence to drive in U.S anyway.
I did not apply for either SIN or health card, since we don't have an address yet. I'll deal with those things when the time is closer. It would be a nightmare to have an Ontario dl while living here, and pointless. All stuff to keep in mind before we actually move.
Congratulations :)

I think the reception you get by POE officers is a hit and miss. As with any country, goverment officials can be narcissistic... even Canadian ones ;) I wouldn't take it personally.

I've heard they don't like you to use a friend or relative's address for landing, and I think they're going to start enforcing it more now since the Lebanon/Israel thing. They want to know that you're actually going to live here. There are some people who 'land' on paper, and have no intention of residing here for 3 years.. just enough to fulfill the 2/5 yr residency requirement. By policy, they HAVE to give you 180 days to supply a permanent address, which is more a grace period for people who have come thousands of miles and land, and truly have nowhere to go.. they have to scramble find a place to live.

So, though they may not have been lenient, they were actually following policy.

Good luck with the house-selling!
Thanks Chelle! You know, the more I think about it the more I realize that the IO wasn't being a jerk about the address, but just explaining that the PR card and SIN aren't actually necessary until we actually live there. Much as I'd love to move today, that just isn't possible, and I am glad that they recognize that new immigrants have to wrap up their current lives before setting about their new ones. In no way would we ever mislead them about that. What surprises me the most I think about the entire procedure is the randomness of it. I've always thought that the application process is standard; it has to be since they process literally hundreds of thousands of them a year (imagine!). We as applicants or bystanders may not understand the process, but it absolutely must be clear to the CIC officers. But when it comes to landing, it seems there are all sorts of experiences. I know of several people who have outright asked if they could use a friend's address (as we did) and the IO had no problem with it. Some have been told it's illegal to send the PR card through the mail, and others have outright been told HOW to (FedEx as opposed to Canada Post/US mail for most security). Go figure. Of course they are only human and have good and bad days, but the apparent difference in policy is confusing. I thought I was well prepared and was asking for something standard, so it was just a minor shock to find out it wasn't okay with our particular IO. Details details, anyway. The important stuff is done! :)
this is just a start not end, eh? in the future, hard-core stuff is coming like looking for jobs, find a school for kid and find a place to settle down...
even minor things like hooking up a cable/phone. ope a bank account, get a creditcard/line of credit. It could be stress out even I am young..glad I have already settled down, otherwise I could even feel how hard just to move from one place to another.
welcome to CANADA
There il say it for the nasty mean, officer!!! Trust me only people who work for the goverment are that bitter, the rest of us are very nice Grouphug
Congratulations! Hope everything goes as planned and you can soon be living your new life in Canada :)
