So I landed on December 21st (outside spousal) and I'm a bit confused as to when I'm able to apply for OHIP. I've been hearing 3 months here and there, but from what day? The govt website says I have to be:
- in Ontario for at least 153 days of the first 183 days immediately following the date you establish residency in Ontario (you cannot be absent for more than 30 days during the first 6 months of residency)
- in Ontario for at least 153 days in any 12-month period
I read this and think I have to wait at least 5 months to be eligible. Can someone clarify and explain it to confused little me? :P
that's so weird, i know in B.C, first day starts from landing day, then 3 month......
anyway, my suggest, you might wanna have a private insurance just for transcation period, no matter how they caculate those damn days.
I THINK you apply right away, but you're not actually eligible for 3 months. I've read (on settlement.org, I think) that you should acquire private insurance to protect you for those initial 3 months, and it suggests that you apply for that within 5 days of landing in (or moving to) Ontario. You might look into that for the meanwhile, and they may be able to help you calculate your days remaining for Ontario Health.
Your question was answered on Imm.ca but for the benefit of others browsing or doing a search on this site I'll respond here as well.
If you are a newly landed immigrant, you are eligible to apply for OHIP at anytime after your landing and you've established residency in Ontario. the following link talks about eligibility:
http://www.health.gov.on.ca/english/publ...dt.html#Q1
Your OHIP coverage will begin 3 months from the date you became a permanent resident and established residency in Ontario.
To apply, you will need documents to prove your immigration status, your residency status, and your identification. You can see the document list here:
http://www.forms.ssb.gov.on.ca/mbs/ssb/f...8E-82_.pdf
The application form for OHIP can be downloaded here:
http://www.forms.ssb.gov.on.ca/mbs/ssb/f...65-82_.pdf
To maintain your eligibility for OHIP coverage, you must:
1. maintain your residency in Ontario,
2. be in Ontario for at least 153 days of the first 183 days immediately following the date you establish residency in Ontario (you cannot be absent for more than 30 days during the first 6 months of residency),
3. be in Ontario for at least 153 days in any 12-month period.
Thanks wongn. You really are a blessing to this and the other forum : )
Were you an in-Canada applicant?
I got my OHIP 3 months after the date of my AIP letter. "Residency" doesn't mean the same thing to OHIP as it does to CIC.
Newyork808 applied outside (as mentioned in her original post).
Ah. Somehow I missed that part.
