I know I've read about how to do this somewhere on here but now I can't find it. Are these the notes that I can look up online to see what is going on with my file? If so, how do I go about doing this? I'm not sure if CAIPS is what I am looking for. Just trying to figure out where and how I can keep up with what's going on, such as when they received my paperwork, when sponsorship gets approved...those types of things. Thanks.
CAIPS has to be requested & take 30 days +/-.
You might be thinking about E-cas, here you can look & see when they received the application, sponsorship approval, etc - no notes on the file itself though (like w/CAIPS)

Thanks DerbyGirl. Apparently I can't look up my info because I don't have any type of identification or receipt number yet. I do know they got it. I sent it via FedEx and saw a signature online showing they received it on December 4th.

Should I expect a letter from them stating they received my application which would have a client ID on it?
Well, it depends if you are inaldn or outland
If outland - you should hear something in about a month or so after they receive it, they are currently processing apps rece'd up to Nov. 16

You can try signing into E-cas using your receipt from payment of fees along with the sponsor's information

If you inland - figure 5-6 months - they are processing up to June 5

We're outland. I wasn't sure how that worked. Guess we'll not be knowing anything until mid to late January on the first part. Thanks for that info.

Actually I have another question concerning this. I used the link you gave me but it seems to only give info on Inland apps. Is there any way to see the processing times for Outland? It seems as though I'm not finding the correct links to tell me when spousal applications for outland are being processed. The only thing I'm seeing for outland are general guesses of each country for how long it may take. Maybe I'm just misunderstanding what I'm seeing?
Not sure just what you are looking at, but the information provided by CIC at the pages reached through the link "Check How Long it May Take to Process My Case" (usually but not always in a colum down the right side of CIC pages):
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information.../index.asp

is indeed general information. And, the difference between what is provided for applications being processed at visa offices outside Canada and that provided for applications being processed in Canada is that the inland info includes reference to the current date for which certain offices are actually processing apps, whereas the outland info is merely "statistical" data, based on a previous reporting period . . . for example, right now it is showing statistical information based on the period October 1, 2008 to September 30, 2009 for spousal family class PR apps .

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information...pouses.asp

Mostly it is averages, or extrapolations, and is really just a rough idea about the timeline in the various visa offices listed . . . and even though there is probably significant variation within the many visa offices which handle applications for persons from various countries, depending on the country the applicant is from, these are not at all broken down. For Buffalo, for example, there is probably a significant difference in the timelines for American citizen applications processed in Buffalo versus citizens from other countries residing in the U.S. or Canada, but the information provided does not break it down.

By the way, just to be clear, the "sponsorship" part of an outland application is indeed an application processed in Canada (at CPC-M), so the link provided by DerbyGirl goes directly to that page where it shows current processing time (37 days) and the most recent date apps were rec'd that are now "in process" (Nov 27, 2009).
