Full Version: Timing of Medical Exam?

Hello,
I have recently booked my American fiances medical exam to be up here in Canada 3 days after we are to be married (also in Canada). Since it is not too late to cancel, is it wise to do it before all of the paperwork and application is completed and send everything off together, (and let them take care of it) or would it be best to make sure everything in the sponsorship process goes smoothly first and THEN send the medical exam when it is requested, or would this just be an unnecessary delay in our process? What has everyone else done??
Thanks!
With spousal sponsorship the medical is required to be sent in with the application - it's on the checklist
If it doesn't take too long to book a medical (for me it took 3 weeks to get an appt), I might reschedule it until you are ready to send in the application - only because the medical has a 1 yr expiry. Of course I don't know your date or how far along you are in getting your application together.

I would wait to schedule your doctor appointment until after you have your FBI back. We had our medical in October and are STILL waiting for our FBI check. The State came back in Three weeks so that didn't take to long but the medical is the easiest and fastest to get.
Thanks guys appreciate it!

I disagree - if usa2can is still waiting on the FBI, it's because they did not know about how to expedite processing by writing a due date (give them about 6 weeks) and "Canadian Immigration" on the outside of the mailing envelope. Most requests sent that way are completed within about 3-4 weeks, regardless of the due date you include.

The police certificates must not be older than 3 months when the application is submitted - the medical exam has a one year validity. The "key" thing about the medical is that, once the application is processed, the Confirmation of Permanent Residence will have an expiry date that coincides with either the expiration date of the applicant's passport or the expiration date of the medical (one year old) - so the applicant has to "land" before that date. If it takes too long to process the application, it's sometimes required to redo a medical exam that has expired - so the timing is important, but not as critical of the timing of the criminal clearances. My advice - submit your request for criminal clearances and get the medical done within the same week. While you're waiting to get the criminal clearances back, finish up with the application and gather all your supporting documentation and be ready to submit when the clearances come back.

As an aside, it appears that the FBI has been basically ignoring the date required on the envelopes and have been taking 10/11 weeks.

RobsLuv-- I did write on the outside AND the inside envelope that it was for Permanent Residence for Immigration but it has not made a difference. I followed all instructions on the paper PLUS what I have learned here. It's just not happening. Hopefully we'll get them soon. The prints were received on November 10th. I also sent an email to the office that was suggested here with my fingerprint number--no reply.
Just got my mail and YES!!!! FBI report back. 11 1/2 weeks.
A little over two years ago, when I was submitting the paperwork for the FBI certificate, the FBI site said to allow 16 weeks; I received the certificate in less than three weeks (and that included international mailing time both directions)! I had planed a schedule for things anticipating the 16 weeks . . . and thus, my FBI cert was about five months old when I submitted it with the PR app (technically too old, but my app was processed successfully anyway).

I have seen several reports in the last couple months along the lines of what PMM and usa2can have said, that the FBI cert has been taking over two months to receive.

And yeah, that makes coordinating everything a little more difficult.

It is nice to coordinate obtaining the medical not too long before submitting the app, to give yourself more time to deal with contingencies in the process or leading up to landing. I was glad my visa was good for many months after I received it, allowing me to delay landing to facilitate moving my business from the States to Canada.
