My hubby got his passport request letter yesterday (yay!), and as soon as he can get his 2 pictures done (we live in a rural area, need to make a trip to the city), we'll get it sent off.
What I am wondering about is the return envelope. It says to make sure you provide a tracking number for the return envelope, and also suggests sending a prepaid Priority envelope for expedited return. Is that possible if we use Canada Post? (Courier service is more of a problem, living where we are.) Can I send a prepaid Priority Canadapost envelope -- will USPS accept that??
Sorry, this sounds like such a dumb question...

Follow the instructions on how to mail the passport to Fort Erie.

Ditto.
Moreover, the passport request letter should have included detailed instructions about mailing the passport; follow those explicitly.
Note that Canada Post does offer tracking express service. I was in Canada and used Canada Post (though they have changed the process a bit -- now I think their instructions are to mail it to their Fort Erie address, whereas I mailed mine directly to Buffalo). It is better if you purchase an envelope to send in the passport which is large enough to include the return envelope without folding it.
But, again, be sure to follow the instructions in the letter.
The passport is not going to Buffalo, but is to be sent to the L.A. office... so I don't have the Fort Erie option.
The letter says: "You may send your passport by post or commercial courier. Please ensure that you enclose a tracking number for your return envelope. We will return your passports by courier envelope ONLY where you have pre-paid the courier company for the return service or if you have an account with the courier company. In the absence of pre-payment of the return freight, we will return your passport by certified mail via the US Postal Service. USPS Express or Priority mail envelopes which do not carry the appropriate postage (metered postage not accepted) will be returned by certified mail."
I enclosed a pre-paid Fed Ex envelope. I had to open a Fed-Ex account using a credit card and put that account no. on the envelope. Just got my passport back today!
OK. The Canada Post option will not work in that instance because the return is being sent from within the U.S. (Buffalo embassy simply drives the Canada Post return envelopes across the border and then sends them; I don't think L.A. embassy employees drive home to Canada every night :) )
You will need to check with what courier services are available in the nearest city, and check directly with them about "returns" . . . not sure if it could be "in care of" or if you would have to pay for a "box."
Whichever you use, you can ordinarily include the prepaid envelope in the package you send . . . as I said before, just be sure to purchase an envelope for sending that is large enough to include the prepaid return . . . or as emfab, follow whatever procedures the particular courier service you use and if necessary open an account . . .
. . . yeah, it is inconvenient . . . but it is the next to last step which will put the PR visa in your hand; the last step being landing . . . you are close, very close.

Hee hee... no, I don't think so. ;)
Thanks for all the advice, everyone. We'll have to check into our courier options. *Almost there... * :)
