To anyone in the same boat as me, especially those in the TO area: if a so-called job agency suddenly calls you out of the blue and asks to meet up with you, implying a potential job match for you, my advise is DON'T GO!

Not only do they charge you a few % of your 1st year's salary (assuming they really find you a job), you have to pay a hefty $300-400 upfront just to become a member! They can do this by just claiming that they are not an employment agency, therefore escaping the regulations that normal agencies abide by.
Based on what I've read about reputable employment agencies they are paid by the employer to find good workers which means those who have to charge the job seeker may not be worth it
Thats what i've seen to be the norm - the employer pays for the services of finding a suitable person
