My family has been going to the Dominican for a # of years so we have met some very nice people and their families. We invited one of them for a visit for 2 reasons on our end , one for a visit and to see if he was interested in working for a small family business. The second he was unaware of, we first wanted to see if he liked it here.
His visitor visa was turned down for what I think was ludicrious reasons.
1) No wife and kids
2) no airline ticket showing he would return (why buy one if you dont know if your going to be allowed to leave the country?)
NO OTHER REASON WAS STATED
In the process of now applying for a temporary work visa. Any suggestions??????Also as he was turned down for the visitor visa is this going to affect their decision???
Does anyone knopw if the Dominican is a hard country to get approval unless you marry a canadian
If he applied for a visitor's visa it would mean that he was intending to come for merely a visit, if he didn't have strong ties to the Dominican they would definitely refuse it. Having a return ticket is a very clear indication that you are only coming temporarily.
When he applies for his work permit I'm pretty sure they ask if you have ever been refused entry, in which case he would have to answer yes after being refused the visitor's visa. This could lengthen the time to process. Make sure everything is order from the employer's information and research and reasons they can't hire a canadian as well, I would seek the advice of those with more experience in this. I'm sure some other members here might be able to answer your questions more thoroughly.
I think that he definitely stands a chance for a visitors visa if he can come up with the evidence needed that he is planning to return hime after his visit in Canada. I once had a friend from Mexico try to come visit. Being a Mexican he didn't need a visa in place to travel here but he got questioned at immigration in the Vancouver airport and they never ended up letting him in! That was a huge eye opener as to how good we as Canadians have it to be able to hop on a plane and go to a place like Mexico or Dominican for a week each year without any questioning!
After that episode where I talked with the people in immigration and a lawyer we were given some advice if we were to try a visit again:
-the person travelling should be employed and have proof of that. Also a letter from the employer stating that they are aware of his planned holiday and that he will return to work there after his visit.
-he should have evidence of funds in his account that will allow him to support himself while he is here. Do not assume that because he is staying with you or your family he will not need to show much money.
-definitely a return ticket!
-He should be well dressed and groomed for the interview.
-Really, anything that shows ties to his life in the Dominican Republic!
I will post again if I can remember any of the other tips we were given for a second try at entering Canada.
