So i was reading through the pages and pages of questions and answers on this forum and i have come across a few posts on this ever awaited AOR letter....someone mentioned that without it (specifically the file number on it) you wouldnt be able to see your (the sponsored spouse's) updates on ECAS....so my question is...without this fabled letter

will i still be able to check on ECAS - using our client ID or our reciept number - which both work - and see my updates....(which say in process at the moment and i can click on this and it says we started processing ************ application on the ******* etc etc) or do i need the AOR letter to see the sponsored spouse's information....sorry about my confusion - usually I get stuff but some of this is immigration information from CIC is so weighed down in double talk and innuendo's I am loosing track of what the 'real' information is....
If you already have the client number its the same number the AOR letter should have.
If you dont have it, your sponsor in Canada should be able to call CIC to get it.
CIC can be a pain to contact outside Canada from what I hear.
yep we already have the client ID number :) my husband and i were under the impression from other posts that the AOR letter gave us an entirely new ID number....i thought this was too many id numbers for one person to handle

but i am glad to hear that its the sme one...so we will just mosy on as we have been then...ty again

I've had the same number with CIC since day 1, before I even applied for PR status, and its on my PR card too.
Seems once you get that number its all yours.
Some though don't know about their number til AOR, probably what they were talking about.
Nope - you don't see anything more - you're seeing all you'll ever see...lol
Sorry - no magic stuff :)
The AOR (file number) number is differet from the client ID, but both work the same on eCas. Client ID is all digits and the file number on the AOR starts with a letter B- then digits. But to answer your question you can use the client ID or receipt number for eCas. If in the future you need to request CAIPS you will need the AOR (file number)
COtoTO is right - the client ID# and the file number on the AOR letter are not the same.
When someone is processing on an inland application, their client ID# is used to identify their file at CPC-Vegreville . . . because the client ID# is the number assigned to the temporary resident when they enter Canada. But inland applicants don't get AOR letters! AOR letters go to outland applicants - from the overseas visa office to acknowledge receipt of their file once CPC-M transfers it. The "file number" is the number assigned the file by the overseas visa office, and it is included on the AOR letter. Most outland applicants won't have a client ID# - because client ID numbers are only used to identify a temporary resident of Canada (and the majority of outland applicants are not in Canada), and they are assigned as identification numbers to approved sponsors.
Now, for checking eCAS - it is possible to use the Client ID# assigned to the sponsor, and the sponsor's information (birthdate, etc) to access eCAS, and then click a link within the sponsor's eCAS file to access the applicant's info. And it is possible, for awhile, to access eCAS using the applicant's client ID# (if they have one, but not all will), but in my own experience (an outland applicant staying in Canada with legal temporary status), my Client ID# stopped working for checking eCAS as soon as the overseas visa office had my file and had assigned a file number. After that, I had to use the file number to access eCAS - unless we checked through my sponsor/hubby's eCAS using his Client ID#.
well we are outland........so i guess i will still be waiting on my AOR letter...and from what i can gather we will need the information off this AOR letter to access the ECAS page to find out the status of your application....I guess i will have to call Sydney and check up on our letter..thanks agian for all your answers they were very helpful :)
or we can keep using my husbands client id number and get the same result.... (i just read that last bit from Robsluv) thank you again..

BTW - I love your avatar . . . the leaves here have actually looked just like that for the past few weeks. Beautiful fall we've had - beautiful avatar to remember it by!
thank you, yes, it is beautiful - my husband emailed us some pictures from outside our home and my 8 year old was a little distraught that the "rainbow trees" had come without her being back....she was hoping to be back before the rainbow trees finished and the snow had started...i hope that we make it.
